4,000 Years Ago in Central America

Around 2500 B.C. the Maya started cultivating corn (maize) and abandoned a nomadic way of life to settle in villages surrounded by cornfields. In the Tehuacan Valley in Mexico, at this time there was a gradual shift from foraging to crop growing, a process that may have taken over thousands of years.

Meanwhile, in what is now Guatemala the advanced agricultural civilization the Ocos people arose. Named after an archaeological site Ocos village, these people lived in large villages, and while they did not use writing, they made sophisticated pottery.
