Years Ago in East Africa
From
about 750 BC, a Nubian Kushite dynasty rules in Egypt from the
capital of Napata. The Nubians, aside from a relatively small
region far south of Napata, were themselves once ruled by the
Egyptians.
In 591 BC, the Egyptians, now free of Assyrian rule, launched
an invasion southward. The capital of the Nubian kingdom of Kush,
Napata, was captured and sacked. The Nubians remained undefeated
however, and retreated 500 km upstream to Meroe, which became
the new capital. The kingdom was now called Meroe after the city.
66 years later, in 525 BC, Egypt was conquered by the Persians.
A Persian invasion of Meroe, however, was defeated.
