Years Ago in India
Rice
growing was apparently first done in the Malaysia/Indochina region
about 5500 years ago. Both rice and cotton were important crops
in the Harappa culture of the Indus valley. The city of Mohenjodaro,
with a population of 35,000 people, had planned neighbourhoods,
canals for irrigation and water drainage, communal granaries and
bath houses, and was protected by walls.
The advanced Indus Valley or Harappan culture had appeared. Archaeological
digs, such as at Mohenjodaro, show cities were laid out according
to a checkerboard pattern, with canals and brick buildings. Loosely
organized in a series of independent city states, the Harappans
occupied a region from the eastern border of Iran through north
India, an area bigger than Egypt and Mesopotamia combined. The
origin of the Indus Valley people is not known for certain, but
they were probably the ancestors of all the Aryan-speaking peoples.
