Years Ago in Mediterranean
Badari,
Merimde and Nagada cultures (consisting of groups of farming villages)
along the lower Nile, merge to form the two kingdoms of Upper
Egypt and Lower Egypt. Kings Narmer and Aha in one of the first
known wars united the two kingdoms around 2850BC.
A few hundred years after Europeans had been shifting around huge
blocks of stones, the Egyptians started to do it too. The 500
years between 2700-2200BC are called the Age of the Pyramids.
Zoser, the first known pharaoh, was buried in the step pyramid
of Sakkara around 2780BC, followed by the classic pyramids of
Snefru, Kephren and Mycerinus, and the great pyramid of Cheops,
the most famous of all.
The island culture of Crete developed around 2600BC under the
semi-legendry king Minos. Autonomous city states, such as Knossos,
arose with extensive overseas trade.
Trade in olive oil, wine and pottery well established along the
Mediterranean coast and major rivers.
