5,000 Years Ago in North America

Stone scraper: this tool was used to scrape animal hides, but it has a number of different edges purposely designed for use on large or small areas.

Earliest ancestors of the Inuit start to arrive from Siberia after 4200BC and apparently displace earlier migrants. Little is known of these new arrivals, but they had a technologically sophisticated microblade industry--that is, they manufactured small, finely made stone blades. Because of this, archaeologists call these people "Arctic Small Stone Users".

Some of the oldest art in North America is found in the Barrier Canyon region of the southwestern United States. These show animal and human shapes, as well as abstract designs that could indicate such things as rainfall. Some of the human shapes resemble the clay figurines of the Desert Archaic Culture. However, different styles of painting show up in different areas. This might be sign that there were varied cultural groups of people living here.
