Years Ago in Northeastern Asia
Although
ox carts were used in Sumeria and India, the horse-drawn chariot
was probably invented in the Ural steppe region. While stone carvings
show ox carts were used for war, they must have been very slow
compared to the horse drawn chariots used by the people of the
northern steppe. The use of the horse chariot was a revolution
in military technology.
The horse was likely first domesticated and used for riding in
central Asia. The early horse of the central steppes, similar
to Przewalski's horse, was too small to be used for riding, and
was used for meat and milk like cattle. The use of selective breeding
led to larger horses that could be ridden, a revolutionary development
at least as important to the steppe nomads, as the wheel was to
the Sumerians, as it gave them unparalleled overland mobility.
