4,000 Years Ago in South America

Puerto del Sol gateway, Tiahuanaco

Tiahuanaco must have flashed like lightening in the sun when viewed from the valley floor far below. Little is still known about the people who built this city on the high plateau of Bolivia near Lake Titicaca. It is the oldest known city in North or South America. Buildings and walls are made of massive stones, cut into precise blocks. Archaeologists have recently discovered that the walls of the city were once covered in gold. Structures include public squares, workshops, houses and temples.

Evidence of the first use of the bow in Patagonia dates from around this time. El-lal is the mythical inventor of the bow and arrow, according to ancient legend in the Argentinean province of Patagonia. Similar to some Greek and Celtic myths, El-lal's father, Nosjthej, wished to eat his son, and thus snatched him from his mother. But El-lal was rescued by Rat, who hid El-lal in his hole. El-lal learned much knowledge and many secrets from the wise Rat. When he was grown, El-lal emerged from hiding, protected by his new invention the bow and arrow. He had many adventures, fighting fierce giants, and finally battling and killing his father. Eventually El-lal decided to leave the world again, and said that people would now have to look after themselves

From that point on, people would have to look after themselves, but they now had the help of the bow and arrow.
