Years Ago in South America
The
domestication of plants and animals had started in South America
by at least 5000 years ago, including the guinea pig and llama.
But the use of animals was never as important here as in Asia,
Africa and Europe. While used for meat, wool and to carry goods,
the llama, for example, did not have the strength of a horse,
ox or elephant. These animals did a lot of the pulling, lifting
and carrying work for humans in Europe, Africa and Asia. But in
South America, human power remained most important. Plant crops
were very important however. These included cotton, potatoes,
squash beans and chilies.
Chinchorro people, Chile, lived by fishing and hunting. They had
elaborate funeral rites including mummification of the dead, with
use of clay masks.
