700 Years Ago in Southeast Asia

Angkor Wat

Burma defeats a Mongolian invasion.

The last great Hindu state in the region was the Kingdom of Madjapahit, between 1200-1300, based on Java and some surrounding islands. An invasion by the Mongolians was defeated, but during the 14th century, the kingdom was conquered by Muslims. The only part of Madjapahit to survive was the small island of Bali, where Hindu traditions survive to this day.

By the 15th century, the Muslim Melaka Empire, centred in the Malaysian peninsula, was the dominant power in the region.

In 1257, Khan Sri Indradit and his able son Khun Ram Kamhang revolt against the Khmer emperor and free the Siamese city of Sukhothai from Khmer rule. A Siamese kingdom is established with Sukhothai as its capital. Khun Ram became king after his father, and further expanded the kingdom south into the Malay peninsula and west into Burma. In 1431, the Khmer capital of Angkor Wat is attacked and destroyed by a Siamese invasion. In the meantime, another Siamese kingdom had risen with its capital at Ayuthia under King U-thong. In 1438, Ayuthia absorbed Sukhothai to form one large empire.
