Fred Varley (1881-1969)

Fred Varley was born in Sheffield, England, like his counterpart, Arthur Lismer. Varley moved to Canada, where he also started working at the Grip art studio in Toronto. Both Lismer and Varley were founding members of the Studio Building group, the forerunners of the Group of Seven, and both men travelled with A.Y. Jackson and Tom Thomson on painting trips to the wild Algonquin region in northern Ontario. During the First World War, Varley joined the army and served as a war artist. In 1926, he moved to Vancouver and painted many landscapes of the rugged British Columbia mountains.
