Gas plant operators work in gas processing plants. From computerized control panels, they monitor, adjust and maintain the processing units and equipment in the plant. They are employed in natural gas processing plants and other gas producing establishments.
As a gas plant operator, you work in gas producing establishments, monitoring and controlling the systems and equipment that take gas from its natural state and convert it into a useable product. Generally, you work in a natural gas plant, located near a gas field. Some gas plant operators work in nitrogen and oxygen producing plants.
Your job in as gas plant is to ensure that the gas produced is free of impurities. Some natural gas that comes from the ground is called sour gas. It contains impurities such as hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide that must be removed. Gas that has had unwanted impurities removed is called sweet gas. The gas is then separated into products such as ethane, propane, butane and methane. The gas is also run through a silicon gel that removes water. It's your job as an operator in a natural gas plant to monitor and control the equipment that converts the raw natural gas from the ground into sweet, dry gas. You are also responsible for the flow of this processed gas into the pipelines that carry it to the various industries and homes that use it for fuel. In addition, you make gas flow changes to the supply system to keep pace with customer demands.
From a control panel, you monitor the various processes that are involved in the production of gas for consumption. You control the flow of gas in and out, and check it s quality. You carefully watch temperature and pressure gauges and flow recorders to ensue that all systems are operating properly.
You're also responsible for watching the equipment and performing any minor maintenance that is required. It major repair work is needed, you call in a maintenance crew. To perform all of the duties of your job, you're required to work both indoors and outdoors.
A gas plant operator's job is not normally physically demanding since much of your time is spent in a control room, monitoring the various processes involved in gas production. You may also spend a lot of time outdoors, performing routine checks on equipment. The work can be mentally stressful, if a problem occurs or if you have to keep up with the changing requirements of customers.
Modern gas plants operate under the highest safety standards and the equipment is designed to prevent hazards. Despite this, gas plant operators are trained in handling dangerous substances such as hydrogen sulfide, a deadly gas that can be highly toxic in the event of a leak. You are also trained in the use of a gas mask and other safety equipment.
Gas plant operators are paid by the hour and there is usually shiftwork involved. Generally, an extensive in-house training program is available when you start the job.
If you are mechanically inclined and have good decision-making skills, this could be a good job for you. Since you are dealing with a highly flammable and toxic substance, you must be very conscientious and safety-minded.
Good communication skills are helpful since you deal with many people, including co-workers and management. Senior operators may also train and coordinate the activities of new employees and subordinate staff. To do this well, you must be able to get along with people and have good organizational abilities.
Since gas plants are generally located at the gas fields in remote areas, you should enjoy outdoor work away from the city. A familiarity with computers and background in math, chemistry and physics are also assets in this work.
