Keatsen

Sulveren keatsbal (Van Slooten-bal, 1917)Keatsen is an ancient game still played on the North Sea coast by the Frisian people. Similar games are also still played in parts of Sweden and Spain. Keatsen is a very old form of tennis played with the hands instead of a racket, along with some elements of volley ball. It is an outdoor game played on a field larger than a modern tennis court. The ball is smaller and harder than a tennis ball, and there is also no net. There are two teams, each with three players. One team knocks the ball over into the opposing side of the field. The opposing team attempts to strike the ball back. Scoring is complicated. The field is divided up into different sections and points are scored according to which area the ball hits.
