The gold solidus, the coin introduced by Constantine and leter called bezant for Byzantium, held its value for seven centuries - history's most stable currency. The value of the Byzantine gold coinage was so consistent that it became the international trading currency, and merchants from as far as China preferred to use Byzantine money rather than their own.
